Spotify, Epic Games, and Other App Developers Form Coalition to Fight the App Store

A number of Apple's opponents in favor of changing the rules of the App Store have formed a coalition to advocate for the interests of developers. The Coalition for App Fairness alliance includes Epic Games, Spotify, Basecamp, Match Group, Tile, Blix, Deezer and other developers.

Previously, most of the founders of the coalition have already been in conflict with Apple, and some companies are currently in litigation. So, Epic Games is suing Apple in connection with the removal of the Fortnite game from the App Store after the introduction of the function of internal payments bypassing Apple. Spotify also regularly criticizes Apple, and the European Commission launched an investigation into the App Store based on a complaint from the music service.

The coalition has called on other developers who are unhappy with App Store policies to join the organization. Coalition for App Fairness also promises support for small developers who do not have the resources to counter Apple.

"We are joining a coalition to protect the fundamental rights of developers to build apps and do business directly with their customers," said Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic Games.

The coalition named three main complaints against Apple: the App Store commission of 30%, the lack of alternatives for distributing applications on iOS bypassing Apple's own store, and the company's use of control over iOS to promote its own services, writes TJ.

The coalition also asked Apple and other app store owners to adopt a general set of rules so that developers are not forced to pay "unfair, unreasonable or discriminatory fees" and have the same access to technical information as the platform owner.

The Verge notes that the newly formed organization expects to become an influential force by bringing together disaffected developers. However, Apple will remain the trump card in this dispute, since the applications of the companies participating in the coalition are still hosted on the App Store, and their creators transfer the App Store fees stipulated by the store rules.
